Liverpool volunteers host training day to help City professionals succeed in business

VOLUNTEERS from JCI Liverpool are organising a half day of training sessions, designed to help professionals and entrepreneurs in Liverpool to succeed in business. The event is branded the "Y.E.S.S". event, which stands for "Young Entrepreneurs taking Steps to Success", and it will take place at the office of Liverpool law firm, Hill Dickinson (No.1 St. Paul's Square, Liverpool), on 26 November 2013 from 2pm.

JCI Liverpool are organising the event in collaboration with leading representatives from business and politics, including the Lord Mayor of Liverpool Gary Millar and Max Steinberg CBE.

JCI Liverpool is part of Junior Chamber International, the leading global network of young professionals, present in more than 100 countries with almost 200,000 members across the world, offering its members opportunities in networking, training and volunteer work. JCI's mission is to provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change.

Kai Graf von Pahlen, who is a Solicitor at Hill Dickinson and President of JCI Liverpool, said:- "This event will give professionals, especially young professionals, the opportunity to take their goals to the next level. We have a dynamic range of speakers who will encourage delegates to develop strategies for succeeding in what they do. In addition to the training sessions, there will also be free dinner for the delegates, kindly sponsored by Mayur Restaurant.  At JCI Liverpool, we are all volunteers who want to give back to the community. We are organising this event in order to raise money for the Lord Mayor's Charity Appeal. We also want to make this event accessible and affordable, and we therefore only charge a small administration fee of £2 for each delegate, which (together with any donations received) will go to charity."

All the presentations will be delivered by members, and corporate partners, of JCI Liverpool, who have created a diverse programme of activity, with the clear objective of teaching valuable skills to those who wish to succeed in business. The training sessions will include:-

► "Why do leaders lead?", by Jim Graves and Peter Schriewersmann, who will explain leadership theory and competencies. Jim is a professional trainer, and also serves as the Chairperson of the Merseyside Adventure Sailing Trust. Peter is Head of Partnership Development at arvato UK & Ireland (Public Sector), which is part of Bertelsmann, Germany's largest media corporation.

► "Learning Styles and Memory Techniques", by Laura Beswick and Nadine Hughes. This session will give you a greater understanding of how the mind works and the different memory techniques you can employ to work more effectively. Laura is the Managing Director at BPP University in Liverpool. BPP is Europe's largest specialist professional education, training and publishing provider. Nadine is an Apprenticeship Recruitment Manager at BPP.

► "Less is more", by Andrew Barlow and Ania Tukalska, who will show you how simplifying every aspect of your business presentations can deliver the results you want and make your life easier! Say goodbye to death by PowerPoint and learn how to create engaging presentations that will win over your audience every time. Andrew is a self-employed presentation consultant, and Ania is a lawyer who originally qualified in Poland and now works at Liverpool law firm, Hill Dickinson.

► "Risk: Surviving and Thriving", by Tawhid Islam, who will speak about how assessing both business and market risks can build the platform for success in the future. Tawhid heads the corporate services team at Islam & Co, Chartered Accountants & Business Advisers, and he is preparing his presentation in collaboration with Carol McLachlan, a chartered accountant, who runs her own coaching company.

► "Social media use in business", by Derek Tierney and Lisan Beentjes, who will give practical guidance on using social media effectively in business, and establishing your brand online. Derek is the Managing Director at Hot Web Designs, and Lisan is Head of Customer Service Improvement at Merseyrail.

The best speaker at the event will receive JCI Liverpool's "Public Speaking Prize", which will be awarded by a distinguished panel of judges, to include Peter Jackson (Managing Partner of Hill Dickinson), Ged Gibbons (Chief Operating Officer of the Liverpool BID Company), Jenny Stewart (Chief Operating Officer of Liverpool Chamber of Commerce), Steve Cornforth (Immediate Past President at Liverpool Law Society) and Kartik Rajput (Business Specialist at HSBC and Deputy President of JCI Liverpool). 

The members of JCI Liverpool have been very pleased about the support which they have received from the Liverpool community. For example, the Lord Mayor of Liverpool will be guest of honour, and open the event for them. Then, the speakers will be introduced by award-winning radio presenter, Mark Jones, from Liverpool's Radio City, who previously hosted the Michael Jackson Aintree concert, entertaining more than 125,000 people. Other sponsors for the event include Hill Dickinson, Swan Print, BJC Foundation and Mayur Restaurant.
