RICS flood warning to homeowners in the North West

WITH severe weather warnings being issued across many parts of the United Kingdom, RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) has called on homeowners in the North West to check that they have suitable flood protection measures in place to avoid suffering any costly damage to their home.

Homeowners and especially those in areas prone to flooding should ensure that they have all their flood protection measures; such as flood-proof doors and windows, and non-return valves to the drainage system; in good working order. Making sure gutters and drains are cleared of blockages is also essential. Failure to implement or action such flood proof measures could prove extremely costly and it could take a long time to rectify any problems.

RICS recommends that homeowners consult the RICS Flooding Guide, a free publication designed to help the public prevent and deal with the consequences of flooding. Furthermore, anybody looking for advice as to what preventative measures are appropriate to their property should contact a local Chartered Surveyor.

Chartered Surveyor, Stephen Holland, Head of Residential Sales at Carter Jonas says:- "The weather in the North West is certainly unpredictable at the moment, but it's always better to be safe than sorry as the impact of flooding can be absolutely devastating. Therefore, it's essential that homeowners do all they can to protect their properties from flooding with the aid of flood protection measures, especially those in high flood risk areas."

The RICS' Flooding Guide offers clear, easy-to-follow advice on how to protect your home from flooding and can be downloaded for free at:- rics.org/flooding.
