St. Patrick's Day - Southport 2014

SAINT Patrick's Day, or the Feast of Saint Patrick or as the Irish say:- "Lá Fhéile Pádraig" is the Irish Festival celebrating the patron saint of Ireland, but even though it is not a real holiday in England, it does not stop people going out to celebrate. As a result this annual celebration of St. Patrick's Day always packs out Southport's only remaining Irish Pub, O'Leary's on Cable Street, just off Nevill St.. Generally it is one of the biggest nights of the year for this small Irish pub, along with Southport's Irish community and this 17 March 2014 was no exception. Patrons, both 2 legged and 4 legged jigged the night away, downing what many call the traditional drink of the hour, Guinness. Well nearly, some did drink other beverages, but all had fun. The atmosphere was very welcoming and buoyant throughout. These are a few snaps we took of the night's celebrations and high jinx...

Did you know that:- St. Patrick was a Romano British aristocrat, whose very name derives from his Patrician status? He was captured by Irish raiders and taken into slavery and during that time increased his Christian faith. Once he escaped, he took religious instruction, maybe in Brittany, and eventually felt called to return to Ireland as an evangelist following, it is said, a prophetic dream. According to legend, he used a 3 leaved shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to Irish pagans by St.. Patrick and that since then 3 and 4 leaved shamrocks have been associated with him. Then, after his death which is said to have happened on 17 March, sometime in 6th Century. He is said to have been buried at Downpatrick, now a medium-sized town about 33 km south of Belfast, in County Down in Northern Ireland...
