| Southport
sparkles for North West Cancer Research OVER 100 locals turned out
in force to support one of Southport's annual fundraising events,
helping to raise around £1,500 for cancer research projects in the
region.  Organised by the Southport-based fundraising committee
for North West Cancer Research (NWCR) this year's Summer Sparkle
event took place on 9 July 2014, at the home and gardens of Joan and
Niall Roy, who for the tenth consecutive year opened their doors to
the public.  Tickets for the event now in its 10th year, cost
£10 and included homemade canapés and bubbly on arrival. Guests
bought generously from various stalls selling items such as clothes,
scarves and soaps. Committee members and supporters of the charity
also donated prizes for a raffle run for the benefit of the charity.
The money raised from the Summer Sparkle event will be donated to
NWCR to facilitate vital cancer research projects in the North West.
Olive Cutts, chairman of the Southport NWCR Committee, said:-
"I'd like to thank Joan and Niall for letting us use their beautiful
garden once again and a big thank you to everyone that came along on
the day to raise this money which will help to fund cancer research
in the region and directly benefit people in the North West.
We've been running this event for 10 years now and each year it
grows in popularity. With a little help from a beautifully sunny
morning, this year was no exception."
NWCR is a leading regional charity which raises money to help better
understand cancer and directly benefit people living in the North
West region. To date it has raised over £28million to fund cancer
research projects in the North West of England, and relies on the
continued support of its fundraisers to maintain its vital work. The
Southport Committee is one of over twenty regional committees in the
North West and Wales assisted by a network of volunteers who cover
Merseyside, Cumbria, Lancashire, Cheshire and North Shropshire.
Anne Jackson, CEO of NWCR, said:- "The Southport committee
have done a fantastic job to raise so much money and we know from
previous events, how popular Summer Sparkle is with the local
residents.  Without the hard work of our fundraising
committees, we would not be able to support the research into the
diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer which we do, so thank
you to Olive and the committee, as well as everyone who turned up to
			give so generously."

 | | Further bids
invited for Mayors Hope Funding A fresh round of
applications for bids from the Mayor's Hope Fund, are being sought
from local organisations helping people who are in poverty.
Since its launch in January 2014, the fund, which was set up by the Mayor
of Liverpool Joe Anderson has awarded over £31,783 in much needed
grants to help local people. And following on from this success,
more organisations that provide foodbank or similar services in
Liverpool are now able to apply for grants.
The aim of the Mayor's Hope Fund is to identify specific projects to
enhance and grow the level of service that that each foodbank can
provide. Examples could include creating storage space and
distribution centres, recruiting and training volunteers and
			collecting and delivering food.
Mayor Joe Anderson said:- "Since I launched the Mayor's Hope
Fund in January we have had a fantastic response and are now in a
position to invite further applications from organisations that
			deliver such a valuable service.
It really is heartwarming to see the impact that the funds so far
have had and I hope we can continue to raise money and awareness to
help those suffering in our City.
These are incredibly tough times for people due to the austerity
measures and unbelievably demand for our foodbanks is rising.
Every penny raised will enable these vital foodbanks to invest in
their infrastructure to meet the increasing need for their services
and support the work of their volunteers who work so hard."

Liverpool City Council receives £250,000 to give local sport a boost A range of exciting
activities to get people into sport will be developed in parts of
Liverpool; thanks to £250,000 of National Lottery funding from
Sport England's Community Sport Activation Fund.  The Liverpool
East Activity Programme (LEAP) run by Liverpool City Council is among 88 projects to receive a share of £15 million of
funding to support grassroots sport activity across the country. The
scheme is designed to get more young people aged over 14 in deprived
areas taking part in physical activity.
The project team will work with local partners to target residents
in Tuebrook and Stoneycroft, Kensington and Fairfield, Anfield,
Knotty Ash, West Derby, Clubmoor and Old Swan who are living with,
or at risk of developing, a long term health condition or engaging
			in anti-social behaviour.

The aim is to improve their health and wellbeing and life chances.
The funding will enable the project to run for 3 years.
Assistant Mayor, Councillor Wendy Simon, said:- "We are
absolutely delighted to receive funding from the Community Sport
			Activation Fund.
Getting people into sport helps give them something positive to do,
improves fitness and encourages team building and social skills. We
will be offering a selection of exciting activities such as
kayaking, taekwondo and skateboarding as a way for people to get
into sport, and encourage them to continue doing it in the long
			term."

Designed in response to local demand, the Community Sport Activation
Fund allows local authorities, charities and other organisations to
apply for funding for innovative projects that will get more people
			playing sport.
Mike Diaper, Sport England Director of Community Sport, said:-
"It's great to be working with innovative projects, like LEAP to
offer people the chance to get into sport in a way that best suits
			them.
The investment being made through the Community Sport Activation
Fund is making a real difference at a very local level. I'm
particularly pleased that more than half the funding is going into
projects in deprived areas, helping more people develop a lifelong
			sporting habit."

The Community Sport Activation Fund is investing a total of £47.5
million of funding over five funding rounds across the country.
Already 156 projects have shared in £27.2 million of funding over
three rounds, receiving grants of between £50,000 and £250,000 to
provide grassroots sport at a very local level.
