S-park-ling shows!
LIVERPOOL'S 2 fireworks displays are
all about the feel good factor. They will be held at Sefton and Newsham Parks,
on Thursday, 5 November 2015, the free illuminations. Both displays will start at 7.30pm, and will be synchronised to a crowd pleasing
soundtrack.
The playlist for the evening includes:- Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno
Mars, Frozen favourite Let It Go, Nat King Cole's classic When I Fall In Love
and brand new Bond theme Writing's On The Wall by Sam Smith.
Liverpool's Assistant Mayor, Councillor Wendy Simon, said:- "These
displays have become a staple of resident's events calendars, and it feels like
we step up the spectacular each year.
Last year, more than 40,000 people enjoyed both sets of fireworks, and we had a
fantastic reaction not only to the visual feast, but also to the accompanying
soundtrack. So we wanted to build on this for 2015 and the team have come up
with a great up lifting set list which will really add to the atmosphere.
We want everyone to enjoy 5 November, yet be safe at the same time, and
organised displays are a great way to achieve this.
I'm sure this year's events will be just as popular as previous years and once
again there will be a great community feel to the event as everyone 'oohhs' and
'aahhhs' in unison!"
For the second year, Heart North West will be the media partner for the event,
and presenters Joel Ross and Lorna Bancroft will be hosting the display at Sefton
Park, and Heart Angels will be hosting Newsham Park.
The presenters said:- "We're really looking forward to working with
Liverpool City Council on this year's fireworks events, after hosting the events
last year we are really excited to be involved with both the displays in Sefton
and Newsham Park again this year.
We'll also be giving all of the latest travel and access news for the fireworks
displays on air on the day of the events to make sure any visitors can access
and exit the displays as quickly and safely as possible."
Visitors to the displays are advised to leave early in plenty of time to travel
to the event. There is limited accessible parking at Croxteth Drive, Sefton Park
and Gardners Drive at Newsham Park.
Due to significant road work disruption at the junction of Smithdown Road, Ullet
Road and Greenbank Drive we encourage you to leave your cars at home as delays
are expected. The event organisers would urge Sefton Park attendees to walk
around the park to the review field and to avoid the café area in the centre of
the park in order to avoid congestion and delays.
Those attending the events are asked not to bring their own fireworks, sparklers
or Chinese lanterns.
They are also asked to wear sensible clothing and footwear and not to bring dogs
to the display.
The displays will last for approximately 20 minutes.
The City Council is working closely with Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and
Merseyside Police to ensure people enjoy 5 November safely and reduce the
problems which can be associated with this time of year.
Members of the public are being asked to make sure they don't leave potentially
flammable material lying around, and not to give young people timber or other
combustible materials for use on bonfires.
1st poppy to be planted in Liverpool for
centenary of WW1
THE 1st of the iconic 'Weeping Window'
Poppies is to be planted in Liverpool, on Tuesday, 3 November 2015, at St
George's Hall, by Assistant Mayor, Councillor Wendy Simon. This event marks
the start of 'Weeping Window' installation preparations. This
large installation will then be fully assembled on the façade of the Hall,
and finished on Saturday, 7 November 2015. 'The Weeping Window'
will then be on display from Saturday, 8 November 2015 until Sunday, 17
January 2016 and is part of a UK wide tour 'The Poppies.' The
sculpture / display comes from the installation called:- 'Blood Swept
Lands and Seas of Red,' that was created to mark the centenary of
the 1st World War and was originally at HM Tower of London in 2014. More

Mayor's Hope Fund grants available
ORGANISATIONS are being invited to
apply for a grant from the Mayor's Hope Fund; the charity established
by Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson for poverty relief. Since being launched
in January 2014, over £170,000 has been donated to more than 65
organisations.
In the latest funding round, the charity wants to support organisations
helping to relieve poverty for the most disadvantaged and help them reach
more people. Mayor Anderson said:- "The cuts we have seen in welfare
spending have had a devastating effect on people who already live in
poverty, and we know that there is even worse to come. The Mayor's Hope Fund
is our way of supporting those who are suffering most, enabling the
organisations that support them to expand the fantastic services they
provide."
Grants of up to £3,000 are available for Liverpool based, not for profit
voluntary and community organisations, that are independent of the statutory
and private sectors. The funding can used for a wide range of
activities, and applications are welcome from organisations who will work
together, share resources and activities. Applications can be made by noon,
on Tuesday, 10 November 2015, at:-

In addition to foodbanks, other organisations that have previously benefited
from the Mayor's Hope Fund include:-
► Progressive Lifestyles; to boost their work
supplying housing estates and schools with food. The grant was also used to
fund a new van, taking the number of people it can help from 2,500 to 4,000
a month.
► Walton Village Residents' Association; to run a
"feed a family of 4" education project, teaching people how to
cook healthy meals from cheap or leftover ingredients.
► Centre 56; to buy kitchen supplies to continue
their work providing food to children who are victims of domestic abuse.
Pots, pans and a dishwasher have all been purchased and to employ a chef for
the kitchen to cook food for the children.
► People wanting to donate to the Mayor's Hope
Fund can do so in the following ways:- TEXT:- Either:- £1, £2, £3, £4, £5 or
£10. Text:- 'LMHF14' followed by the amount to:- '70070'.
For example, to donate £1, you should text:- 'LMHF14 £1' and
then send it to:- '70070.' Some networks might include the

Follow the Poppy Trail
in Liverpool
A special trail has been created to
highlight Liverpool's links with World War One.
To complement the arrival of the iconic Poppies: Weeping Window which will
be going on display on part of the façade of St George's Hall from Saturday,
7 November 2015, a trail called Liverpool Remembers has been produced which gives
a suggested route around the City Centre encouraging residents and visitors
to learn more about the trials and tribulations of those whose lives were
changed forever by the war.
The trail, which been created by Liverpool City Council in conjunction with
National Museums Liverpool, comprises more than 20 locations throughout the
City signposting people to memorials ranging from the Liverpool Pals
Memorial at Lime Street Station, the Unknown Soldier in Exchange Flags and
the Maritime Memorials at the Pier Head right through to buildings of
historic interest such as Martins Bank on Water Street, Liverpool Town Hall
and several of the City's museums.
A map detailing all the points of reference is available to download from
CultureLiverpool.Co.UK/Poppies. It also recommends
a route to take in some of the sites which starts at St George's Hall, works
its way through the City Centre and ends at the Mersey Ferry Terminal with
the dazzle ferry, a First World War centenary art commission by Sir Peter
Blake called Everybody Razzle Dazzle.
Assistant Mayor and Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Events,
Councillor Wendy Simon, said:- "We know that hosting these iconic
Poppies will give visitors the chance to reflect on those who sadly lost
their lives during the war, but we're also hoping that the stunning art
installation will inspire people to learn more about the relevance of the
Poppies. With all our major events, we want to do as much as we can to help
anyone who wants to find out more about the subject matter at the heart of
the cultural activity. The Liverpool Remembers trail achieves just that.
Liverpool has so many connections to World War One and the Liverpool
Remembers trail means that people of all ages can choose their route through
the City Centre and learn more about its history and those men, women and
children whose lives changed forever as a result of the War."
Director of Liverpool Biennial, Sally Tallant, said:- "It is great to
see another significant artwork supported by 14-18 NOW join the dazzle ship
commissions and put a focus on artists' response to the First World War.
Sir Peter Blake and Carlos Cruz Diez's dazzle ships have been experienced by
millions of people already. We are glad that this new trail will open up
even more possibilities for the people of Liverpool and beyond to engage
with the history behind the works."
Karen O'Rourke, Curator of Urban and Military History at the Museum of
Liverpool, who has been involved in developing the trail, said:- "We
have worked closely with Liverpool City Council to create a trail that will
offer those who follow it a real insight into the people who have been part
of significant historic events and occasions in connection with World War
One. It gives me great pride as a Curator of Military History to have helped
to highlight the emotive stories about so many local people who took part in
the war effort, in order that they should be remembered and not forgotten."
