THE historic Black-E Contemporary Arts Centre, in Liverpool's City Centre, will soon benefit from a £600,000 refurbishment!

It was 1 of the UK’s 1st Community Arts Projects when it was launched back in 1968, in the former Great George Street Congregation Chapel.

The listed building; which dates back to 1840's and is owned by the City Council and is badly in need of investment. It has now secured £450,000 from the Arts Council and an additional £40,000 in private contributions.

On Friday, 4 March 2016, the Cabinet is being asked to approve plans to invest £100,000 of Council cash; which will be repaid over the next 20 years through a new lease.

The work will include new flooring, heating, external work and improved disabled access plus investment in the rehearsal and performance spaces to enable it to continue its work.

Mayor Joe Anderson said:- "Anyone who has ever been to The Black-E knows they do absolutely incredible work getting young people involved in culture and the arts. This proposed investment from the City Council is vital as it will secure the other funding they have bid for and enable them to carry out much needed improvements to the building. It will also put the Black-E on a much firmer footing for the future, making sure that they are able to continue delivering a fantastic programme of events for years to come. It is another example of our commitment to investing in the heritage buildings of the City, to make sure they can continue to be enjoyed by future generations."

Bill Harpe, Director and Co-founder of the Black-E said:- "We greatly appreciate this investment by the City, and are proud of our almost 50 year partnership with the City Council."

More information about the Black-E can be found online.
