New road safety measure for Liverpool hot spot

A new pedestrian island is to be created on a traffic hot spot in South Liverpool.  Liverpool City Council is to install the traffic calming measure on Mill Lane, Wavertree, which is a heavily used link road to Edge Lane.

The 6m long and 2m wide "pedestrian refuge" is to be funded through a neighbourhood fund.  The new pedestrian island is estimated to take 4 days to complete and will see the installation of temporary traffic lights on Mill Lane during construction.

Councillor Ann O'Byrne, Deputy Mayor of Liverpool, said:- "Mill Lane is unusually wide and exceptionally busy and this has long been a matter of concern for pedestrian safety. With its proximity to Edge Lane and Wavertree High Street we've been looking at a number of solutions for the local community and am delighted at this outcome. This pedestrian island will provide residents with a safer passage while still maintaining traffic flow."

Liverpool City Council is currently investing more than ₤250m to improve Liverpool's road infrastructure through the Better Roads Programme.  For more information about highways investment in the City visit:- Liverpool.Gov.UK/BetterRoads.
